Dear Sirs,

On the night of July 11, 1964, we were coming home from my grandmother's and grandfathers in Wilmington, Illinois where my father pointed out what he thought was airplane lights. We watched but soon realized that they were too far apart and moving too slowly to be and airplane from our areas so we decided that they must be that of an airliner that was going to land or crash. Pretty soon the lights spread apart and then we didn't know what they were. They kept spread

This is in reply to your recent letter concerning some unusual light formations you and your father observed on July 11, 1964.

It is possible that you were watching the lights from some small airplanes. Sometimes aircraft lights can give an unusual appearance due to their position in the sky, or to unusual atmospheric conditions.

Thank you for reporting this observation to the Air Force.
