Ref: Case: 24 Nov. 1955 Hokkaido, Japan The sighting of a red glow was reported as of 16:13 Z at Long. 140° E. and 52° N, on Nov. 24, 1955. Glow reported to have been low on horizon, at equinith (bearing) 312°. 78 yrs of interest to complete the equinith of the gibbous moon at that instant (16:13 Z) at Hokkaido. For this purpose, we note that at that time the right ascension of moon was approx. 23° 32", and its declination, approx. + 2° 42'. Computation shows that the local sidereal time at Greenwich at C.C.T. 16° 13" was 20° 24".

and at Hoboken it was therefore
5' 48" The hour angle of the
moon (t) was therefore 6' 16"
To obtain the age in with of
the moon, we employ:
$$
\text{tan } \hat{z} = \frac{\sin t}{\cos \varphi \tan 5 - \sin \varphi \cos t}
$$
where
z = age in with angle
t = hour angle of moon
φ = latitude
δ = declination of moon
Making the proper
substitutions we find that,
tan z = 1.180 (approx)
z ~ 49 1/2 W.
The age in with A is therefore
360 - 49 1/2 = 310 1/2
Since the reported bearing was
312°, it would appear thatpage 4
3 the glow and the position of the setting moon* at that time were identical within allowable errors of observation. Moon set at Hokkaido that morning at approx 2 A.M. Local time of sighting was 1:37 A.M. The moon was, therefore, about & set. Further substantiation of identity of object sighted with the moon is hardly needed, but it can be pointed out that at moment, as is the sensest case for senset, the atmosphere causes the moon to appear quite red. Further as is also the case with the setting sun, atmospheric refraction causes the moon & appear somewhat oblong in shape. The pres…
