Flying Object Checked by Smithsonian

Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory officials in Cambridge today were seeking information on a mysterious object reported to be circling the earth.

In Cambridge scientists said they would pick with officials at Chicago's Adler Planetarium and the Geospectrum University Observatory. The unidentified object was first seen at Chicago last Friday and subsequently by Georgetown, in Washington, D. C. Amateur astronomers around the nation also reported acting it. So far it has not been reported seen by anyone in New England.

Dear Mr. [redacted]

The report of an unidentified flying object you gave to the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory was referred by that agency to the Air Force Aerospace Technical Intelligence Center for analysis and/or evaluation.

It is the conclusion of the Aero-Space Technical Intelligence Center that you probably observed a meteor. The absence of a trail is no reason to rule out a meteor, for some leave trails and others do not. It is also true that some of the trails which are left are faint and can only be seen with an optical aid. F

1. Mr [redacted] reported an UFO sighting to the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and was referred to ATIC by that agency.

2. [redacted] reported viewing an object at 2305, 29 August 1960, which was bright orange in color and moving from the northwest to the southwest. The witness viewed the object for an estimated 30 seconds. The object was further described as appearing like the head of a missile on fire. The observation took place at West Roxbury, Massachusetts.
