The Coming of the Saucers High above Kentucky the plane climbed at top speed in an effort to close on an un- identified object in the sky. It had been spotted by many observers below, including the control tower operators at Godman Air Force Base. Three F-51 Mustang fighters had been diverted from a training exercise in an attempt to identify the mysterious craft. Captain Thomas Mantell, flying the leading plane, had outdistanced his wing- men when his first dramatic radio call came to the tower: “I see something above and ahead of me, and I’m still climbing.”’ Mantell was asked to describe wh…

**Mantell’s body was found near the remains of his aircraft...” size...” Seconds later he called, “‘It’s above me, and I’m gaining on it. I’m going to 20,000 feet.’ Those were the last words he spoke. had seen three similar UFOs ten minutes earlier. Two hours later technicians at nearby Rogers Dry Lake saw a round object of aluminum appearance. After watching it for 90 seconds they decided that the strange craft was ‘“‘man-made.”’ Later that same day, a jet pilot flying 40 miles south of Edwards saw above him a flat object that reflected light. He tried to investigate but his aircraft could not climb as high as the UFO. In the early days of UFO reports many people believed that Arnold and others had observed a new secret aircraft or guided missile being developed by the United States milita…

Above: a movie camera being fit- ted into an F-51 fighter plane of the kind piloted by Air Force Captain Thomas Mantell at the time he was mysteriously killed chasing an unidentified flying ob- ject. The cameras were installed about six months after Mantell’s death to enable pilots to photo- graph any strange objects they might encounter during flight. Above right: a photograph of a skyhook balloon taken through a refracting telescope. At the time of Mantell’s death, information on these secret balloons, designed to collect information from the fringes of the atmosphere, was highly classified.…
