Dear Miss [redacted]:

This is in reply to your letter reporting an aerial object which you observed on the night of 27 June 1965.

At 10:03 EST on this date, Echo I was visible in your area moving northeast at 70 degrees elevation. This was the object you sighted if your report was given in Daylight Saving Time, instead of Eastern Standard Time. If the time you reported was Eastern Standard Time, then another satellite of the same or of a higher magnitude was the probable cause of your sighting.

Sincerely,

JOHN F. SPAULDING
Lt Colonel, USAF

Reference the attached letter from [redacted] reporting an unidentified object which she observed on the night of 27 June 1965.

A ECHO I, at 2203 EST, was North of the City, moving its seven degrees elevation. Her sighting is ECHO I if the time given was EST and not Daylight Savings Time. However, if the time given was DST then another satellite of the same or no higher magnitude was the cause of her sighting.

As satellites pass into the earth's shadow they are no longer visible

Sirs,

On Sunday, June 27, at approx. 10 o'clock p.m. I saw a starleke object suddenly move steadily across a small span of sky west to east over the Landover Hills, Md area. In ten to fifteen seconds it stopped, and I could not find it again.

I dismissed it at the time and hoped to hear a report in the news on Monday since there are many radar stations in the Washington area and if it was a foreign object it would surely be detected. So I just figured it was a star or satellite.

But later on during the week I was excited to hear about a similar object passing over Antarctica (going
