Mr. K. H. Wehlitz aboard the Panamanian SS. Italia, Capt. P. Thormoehlen, Master, reports that between 0700 G. M. T. and 0730 G. M. T., September 19, 1953, in approximate position 45°08' N., 61°12' W., northern lights were observed from 330° to 360° and to an altitude of 40°. The intensity of the display varied slightly as shimmering and straight waves of blue light moved from the horizon upward. The radio operator reported no reception on short wave during this period.
