Dear Mr.

This is in reply to your report of an aerial object which you observed and were unable to identify on 17 August 1965.

The object which you observed has been evaluated as a meteor, not a satellite as you suggested. Satellites have much slower speeds than the object which you observed. All known satellites have an easterly component in their direction of flight.

Thank you for reporting your observation to the Air Force.

Sincerely,

JOHN P. SPAULDING

Reference the attached letter from requesting information on his unidentified observation of 17 Aug 65. His observation is characteristic of a meteor. Duration of 15 seconds is rather long, however, the object did traverse more than 90 degrees of arc. Satellite observations have apparent speeds much slow

approx. 10°-15° above horizon traveling horizontally to the earth from N to S stowed & appeared to move ENE to WSW, as it faded and disappeared behind trees. was clearly distinguished, a little brighter than the North stat, about 2 times brighter. at fastest speed it covered the width of my thumb (1) at (20°) 20°) apms length in second & at stow

est speed (when it appeared to ~~blow~~ and move away) it covered the same 1" in just less than three seconds.

Saw object for just about 15 seconds when walking Eto W on Main Street just west of La Salle St in Ottawa Ill at 9:28 C.S.T. It looked like a large meteor only it was going across instead of down.

Would like this just checked for believe that it was

just one of our
satellites. No
one else, that
I know of, say
this.
Thank you.

10:57 I just noticed
what looked
like an airplane
very large &
clear, within
1 mile N of Ottawa
Ave. in Ottawa
traveling
at about the
same speed
as the first
at 1 mile
object, but
since it was
so close, I'd say
50-60 MP
page 7
was going N to S then
very suddenly
turned off was
going W to E
then appeared
to land.
