Dear Mr. [redacted]:

This is in reply to your letter reporting an aerial object which you observed on the night of 27 June 1965.

At 10:03 EST on this date, Echo I was visible in your area moving northeast at 70 degrees elevation. This was the object you sighted if your report was given in Daylight Saving Time; instead of Eastern Standard Time. If the time you reported was Eastern Standard Time, then another satellite of the same or of a higher magnitude was the probable cause of your sighting.

Sincerely,

JOHN P. SPAULDING
Lt Colonel, USAF

Reference the attached letter from [redacted] reporting an unidentified object which he observed on the night of 27 June 1965.

S. ECHO I, at 2203 EST, was North of the City, moving EE at 70 degrees elevation. His sighting is ECHO I if the time given was DST and not Eastern Standard Time. However, if the time given was EST then another satellite of the same or of higher magnitude was the cause of his sighting.

Gentlemen:

I wish to report the following sighting, which I recently experienced.

LOCATION OF VIEWER: On the Lower New Germany Rd., about 4 mi. south of U.S. Route 40 — this location would be approx. 7 or 10 mi. S.E. of Grantsville, Md.

DATE & TIME: Sunday night June 27, approx. 11 pm, or a few minutes earlier.

DESCRIPTION OF OBJECT: Object had the general size, color, & brilliance of a medium-size star — somewhat

RATE OF TRAVEL: The object passed through approximately half (or 90°) of the overhead heavenly arc of 180°, in a period of 5 to 10 minutes. When I first noticed it, it was about 25° or 30° west of a point directly overhead; when I stopped observation it was about 55°, east of point directly overhead. I had no way of estimating height of object, but my impression was that object was at least several miles high, and perhaps very considerably higher.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Brilliantly clear.

RE: OBSERVER: Sober. I stopped my car (convertible, with top down) on this
