On 13 October 1953 at 0300Z, USAF radar operators S/Sgt Washington and A/2C Napier at Offutt AFB, Nebraska, observed an unidentified object on SCR-584 radar during weather balloon rawin operations. The target appeared at 54 degrees elevation, 250 degrees azimuth, traveled on heading 250 degrees for 10 minutes, then gradually changed direction to heading 070 degrees. Altitude varied 25,000-37,000 ft. Total tracking ~36 minutes before fading off scope. Weather clear, no thunderstorms. Investigating officer concluded the phenomenon was likely microwave transmission/reception anomaly aided by meteorological and astronomical activity.
