Narrative

On 18 July 1956 at 0008Z (night, clear), civilians including a highway patrolman near Arkansas City, Kansas observed a teardrop-shaped object described as a bright star resembling a large light bulb with orange color and green points. Object appeared at approximately 5-6000 ft, 30 degrees elevation moving north to southeast slowly ascending. Object was still present after 40 minutes. Probable balloon based on description, course, winds-aloft and duration. Possible release from Wichita or Kansas City.
