Narrative

On 14 May 1955 at 0525Z, a United Airlines pilot flying a Convair (United 559) from Ventura to San Francisco via Amber 8 Airways at 2000 feet observed a line of circular lights that changed into a ball of light with varying intensity. The object passed in front of the aircraft, flew on a parallel course with the United aircraft, then faded from sight to the east. Total sighting duration was one hour. Investigation revealed an RC-121 was in the area and followed the flight path of the United aircraft up the valley. Two F-94Cs were vectored from CAP but no intercept made.
