Narrative

At approximately 2100Z on 19 July 1956, a round/pear-shaped object the color of fire was observed traveling west to east in descent over Medway, Maine. A commercial pilot at Munsungan Lake reported the object had no sound until it disappeared behind trees, when a loud dynamite-like explosion was heard. A slight wavy smoke trail was visible for about three seconds. Conclusion was astronomical/meteorite (bolide type) after Flight Service confirmed no missing aircraft.
