ACHDQ 1704 — 1955-05-27 — Clearfield, Pennsylvania (within 30 mile range of Claysburg

On 27 May 1955 between 0221Z and 0413Z, a GOC observer near Clearfield, Pennsylvania sighted a flickering red-to-white light over a mountain (900 feet high) that initially appeared as an aircraft. Two aircraft passing nearby were observed at different times, leading the observer to conclude the object was not an aircraft. The object was stationary, slowly moving up and down, and faded due to dense fog. Two F-86Ds were vectored to investigate but returned to base without locating the object.
