Narrative

On 5 June 1956 at 1437Z, Major Robert L. Oelker and Major Arnold E. Zimmerman observed an unidentified flying object from a B-25 aircraft (#44-31478, 6000 ft) directly over Municipal Airport, Birmingham, Alabama. Object was traveling directly toward observers at approximately 3,000 ft altitude, climbing, then veered west of observers and disappeared climbing to the south. Object was circular and flat, approximately 40-50 ft diameter, 6-8 ft thick, aluminum/silver. Visible 20 to 30 seconds. Investigation revealed a regular pilot balloon was released at 0830 CST. The conclusion suggested balloon.
