Narrative

On the night of 11 October 1956 at 2245 (10:45 PM), an 18-year-old civilian driving north on Highway 45 along the western edge of the US Naval Ammunition Depot at Crane, Indiana, observed a large glowing red or amber light approximately 100 yards from the road. The object was circular, about 40 feet in diameter, and 75-100 feet in the air. The witness stopped for approximately 30 seconds to view it. The object then left, going across the Depot at a speed comparable to a shooting star. Sky was clear, no other aircraft visible, object made no noise. Witness's father had reported sighting an unidentified object over the Depot on 17 September 1956. No report of low-flying aircraft over the Depot on 11 October 1956. Investigation by Naval Ammunition Depot Legal Officer based on Depot Criminal Investigator information.
