635ACW (Jan 56) — 1956-01-31 — Lake Washington (Seattle), Washington
Narrative
On 31 January 1956 at 0330Z, an entire Boy Scout troop and AWD building custodian in Seattle, Washington observed a round multicolored object (bluish white, amber orange, and red) about 2 times the size of a pencil eraser end. Object noticed when observers looked at stars at 28 degrees elevation, slowly rising and moving south. Still observed bearing 102 degrees at 0730Z. F-86D's diverted from training flight to investigate Lake Washington area but reported negative sighting; helicopter practicing landings at Tacoma may have been the object. Conclusion: 25th ADIV weather officer stated good possibility of temperature inversion. Inversion caused reflection of ground object to observer.
