AIRO IR-2-53 — 1953-01-28 — Northwest of Albany, Georgia (ESE of Albany, between Albany
Narrative
On the night of 28 January 1953 at approximately 2135 hours, Capt. Frank C. O'Bannon, piloting a T-33 jet near Albany, Georgia, observed an unusually bright object approximately 17 minutes. The object first appeared circular and white; in the final three minutes it cycled between white and orange. In the last 15 seconds it morphed from circular to triangular and turned deep red, then split into two stacked triangles before vanishing instantly like an electric light switching off. Object stayed at a constant 45-degree angle (ten o'clock high) relative to the aircraft throughout. Albany radio confirmed corresponding radar contact at the reported time.
