NAFOI — 1956-12-10 — Victoria, Texas area (sighted from F-100C)
Narrative
On 10 December 1956 at 2000Z, USAF pilot 1/Lt Nelson Allen of the 452nd Fighter-Day Squadron flying F-100C aircraft #54-1789 at 51,000 ft and 0.93 Mach observed an unidentified flying object. Object was contrail-emitting, single, silver, with straight wing almost twice as long as fuselage, estimated wing-span at 40 feet, estimated altitude at 56,000 to 62,000 feet, estimated speed at 1.35 true Mach. Object had configuration similar to F-89 or T-33 except very little space between trailing edge of wing and leading edge of empennage. Pilot left object to return to home base due to shortage of fuel after fifteen minutes observation. No action taken due to performance limits of F-100C aircraft.
