AIS3G-C-21 — 1955-03-03 — Pittsfield, Maine (Detroit, Maine; GEOREF HJFQ 3647)
Narrative
On 3 March 1955 at 0945Z near Pittsfield, Maine, a civilian deputy sheriff observed a diamond-shaped bluish-white object the apparent size of a basketball at approximately 40 degrees elevation, azimuth 135 degrees. The object drifted 40 degrees left and right, with intensity diminishing as darkness waned; total observation 30 minutes. An isothermal weather inversion was present between 5,000 and 6,500 feet (temp +0.5C). Capt Andrew Matyas (OIC Flt 3-G, 4602D AISS) recommended no follow-up investigation because the object was similar to one reported by another observer (4711th DEF WG TT MSG DO-INT 136-B, 8 Feb 55).
