Narrative

At 0757 hours on 17 December 1952, observers on the Cornell University campus in Ithaca, New York saw a light resembling a jet exhaust, greenish-blue with an orange-red trail, moving westward at very high speed. It appeared to traverse 30 degrees of arc in approximately two seconds. High cirrus clouds estimated at over 20,000 feet were present. The light disappeared from view behind the leading edge of a cloud. No aircraft structure was visible. Observers estimated the speed to be in excess of 700 miles per hour. Local civil defense was notified.
