On 8 January 1956 at 1659Z, 2.5 miles north of Bedford, Indiana, observers reported an object with nickel-to-silver coloring, close-together configuration, changing shape, and expelling vaporish smoke. The object moved from side to side over 2 hours 34 minutes via ground visual. Clear conditions, surface gusty to 35 knots. Fighter aircraft (jet type) in the local area; fighters were contacted to investigate but did not make visual contact, sighting only a Piper Cub assumed to be CAP. Assistant Chief Director suggested the fighters/jet types could have been mistaken for UFOBs.
