Narrative

On 9 March 1955 at approximately 0902Z the USS Bear and other vessels reported sighting multiple red flares ascending on the horizon over Atlantic waters off Florida. USS Powell reported sighting flares at position 28.08N 79.27W. Investigation by 4632d AISS confirmed via Maxwell Flight Service Center that the flares had been dropped by three B-47 aircraft from Lockbourne, Ohio on a night photo mission in the vicinity of Avon Park AFB target area.
