On 5 December 1956 at approximately 2205Z, a student at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, MA observed a round dark object the size of a basketball. The orange exhaust caught the observer's attention, observed at 030 degrees elevation, 132 degrees azimuth initial and 035 degrees azimuth final. Object traveled in straight line and ended in an orange-yellow puff of explosion. Duration 1 to 3 seconds. Night with dark conditions. Report submitted by 4050th Air Refueling Wing, Westover AFB MA, with preliminary investigation by S/Sgt William C. Jordan.
