Narrative

During winter 1951/52 between 1800 and 0030 hours during a frost period, source observed a peculiar appearance originating east of the Volga River. A vertical vapor trail was followed by a ball of light like a fireball, color darker than sodium. Height estimated at least 7,000 meters. No noise or detonation. White smoke remained, then dispersed. The phenomenon recurred in July 1953 around noon and during Aug-Sep 1953 nights. Source could give no explanation.
