Narrative

At 0245Z on 26 June 1955, observers in the Washington-Maryland area reported a single round yellowish very brilliant grapefruit-shaped object with a trail four to five times its length. The object oscillated, then moved off with erratic motion approaching the observers' home, going from 45 degrees elevation to overhead to 45 degrees on the other side, traveling a flight path from National Airport to Hillcrest Heights MD before moving off at high speed. Observers stated several searchlights were trained on the UFOB and that the lights went out when the beam approached the object, and the ceiling lights at Washington National Airport went out when the UFOB passed (resuming operation when it passed). Total duration about 7 minutes. Investigation by Flight 3-H concluded a weather balloon launched from a nearby observatory was the cause.
