1953-08-05 — Black Hawk and Rapid City, South Dakota; Bismark, North Dako
Narrative
At 2005 MST on 5 August 1953, Mrs. Phyllis Killian of Black Hawk, South Dakota saw a bright red object very low approximately four miles northeast of Black Hawk. The object made a pass over Rapid City at high speed, returned, and hovered. Two AC&W men confirmed the sighting. Lt. Stockham of the 54th FIS was vectored to the area. Radar contacts were made by both the F-84D and ground radar at the 740th AC&W. Subsequent objects sighted over Bismark, North Dakota included one with a blue-green blow-torch-like tail exhaust, another at 15,000 ft moving south, and a fourth at 2,000 ft moving northwest. The preparing officer concluded the case strongly supports the existence of a flying object, with multiple radar plots in the same geographical position as visual sightings.
