Narrative

On 30 July 1956 at 1925Z, two GOC observers on duty saw a round black object, 25 yards in diameter, hovering at approximately 3,000 feet at a 45-degree azimuth, in the geographic position QP 4508. The object appeared to ascend into clouds whenever aircraft came within four miles, then reappeared. Tinfoil Baker One and Two were diverted from practice intercepts to investigate but found nothing. Griffiss AFB confirmed one balloon (Type ML-307) had been released from Griffiss at 1900Z on 30 July 1956, accounting for the sighting. The 655th AC&W Squadron at Watertown NY filed the report.
