Narrative

On 5 April 1949 between 0930-1000 MST, multiple observers in Cache and Weber counties, Utah reported aerial phenomena. Lt. Roy J. Handfield (Logan PD) saw what appeared as a puff of smoke or vapor at ~15,000 ft. Fred Sears observed a brilliant fiery tracer-bullet-like object descending from south at high speed, leaving an orange flash and bluish-white smoke or vapor trail visible for 10-15 minutes; heard a sound like an explosion. Frank Petersen, working with a power line crew, observed a triangular-shaped object descending rapidly, changing colors from blue to purple to orange to yellow to bright green before disappearing. The FBI Salt Lake office received reports from the Cache County and Weber County Sheriff's Offices. Investigation conducted by OSI Detachment 16 at Hill AFB.
