AISOC (Cunningham TN) — 1956-08-11 — Cunningham, Tennessee (36 31 N 87 22 W), ~10 miles south of
Narrative
On 9 and 11 August 1956 (sightings at 09/2245Z, 09/0408Z, 10/0235Z, 11/0231Z), a 43-year-old Fort Campbell post supervisor in Cunningham, Tennessee observed multiple appearances of a round, basketball-sized object that changed color from red (stationary) to white (moving). Object hovered for 2-3 minutes at ~3000 feet altitude, moved slowly westward, hovered again, dimmed, and faded out over a 10-minute span. A meteorite had previously passed through the area; this was the fourth sighting. Investigators considered a helicopter night operation but had not confirmed it. Reports from NAS Lakehurst and NAS Akron stated no airship cross-country flights originated from those stations at the time.
