UFOB-234-56 / OPS 8-38 — 1956-08-05 — Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (GOC Filter Center)
Narrative
From approximately 0830Z to 1115Z on 5 August 1956, observers at the GOC Filter Center in Oklahoma City watched a cigar-shaped object with yellow halo and reddish tail rise from 60-degree to 70-degree elevation, moving SSW and upward, getting smaller until disappearing. Observed by ground-visual and 7x50 binoculars over approximately three hours. Investigation by Flt 2-D, 4602d AISS, determined the source: a balloon with light attached, released at Tinker AFB at 0830Z, tracked until 1920Z when it burst, with equipment continuing in flight by attached parachute.
