Narrative

On 30 June 1956 from 0118Z to ~0330Z, numerous observers across Redlands, San Bernardino, and Ontario, California reported a round/irregular silver-white object that became rosy red as the sun set. F3D aircraft were scrambled multiple times but could not reach the object's altitude (scope-reported 50,000 ft with no speed). An Ontario NOTAM confirmed a balloon in the area at approximately the same time. The investigating officers Maj Ahlstrom and Capt Tappan concluded sighting was a balloon of unknown origin.
