Narrative
On 14 September 1956 at 0534Z, the pilot of United Airlines Flight 736, age 58, while studying the Big Dipper near Santa Barbara, noticed what appeared to be an extra star in the constellation. The light began moving toward San Francisco, then direct to Stockton where it faded above 9,000 feet. Stockton Radio and Monterey Navy also reported similar sightings. Two F-86Ds were scrambled at 0633Z with negative results.
