Narrative

At 0155Z on 18 July 1956, an F-86D pilot at 21,000 feet (Mach 0.65, heading east at 90 degrees) over Mastic Airport on Long Island, NY, saw a sudden flash 300 ft off his wing. Object resembled a tear drop 10 ft by 5 ft, green bisected by a white streak, descending vertically, flashed off in 1-2 seconds. After 5 minutes pilot descended to 3,000 feet over the north shore of LI between Riverhead and Bethpage where he saw more green flashes. Concluded possibility of flares.
