AISS-UFOB-340-55 — 1955-09-01 — Shelby, Iowa (GEOREF F.IM 3331)
Narrative
On 1 September 1955 at 2204Z, two 15-year-old female GOC observers (Mary Ann Perry and Janet Wahrenbach) at Shelby, Iowa reported unidentified flying objects. Investigation by Detachment 2 of 4602D AISS revealed the object was definitely identified as a radiosonde-type balloon which had burst and dropped a parachute carrying the modulator unit. Detachment 2 took possession of the parachute and modulator unit as physical evidence. Captain Bischofs of Detachment 2 noted that the rash of UFOB sightings in Iowa that month could be largely attributed to astronomical activity, with many fall stars appearing to change colors (red, green, white, blue).
