Narrative
On 31 May 1956 at 0359Z west of Alberton, Montana, Mrs. Elmore Smith (43, housewife/GOC) along with her husband and Mr. and Mrs. T.A. Farre observed two objects shaped like upside-down parachutes at estimated 40,000 feet altitude. The objects had a steady descent in a steady and straight course; color was that of a white magnesium flare which changed to red at 0446Z. Observation duration 47 minutes via ground visual and 6X30 binoculars. Headquarters check with ADC Weather indicated four balloons out of Vermallis, California were in the Montana area; balloons preset for 50,000-60,000 ft. Concluded possibly balloons.
