At approximately 0105Z on 19 January 1955 (1815 MST 18 January) residents in and around Kalispell, Montana observed a bright flash of light accompanied or followed by a loud explosion. A high school student chopping wood saw bright light illuminate his surroundings; a Skywatch observer reported a bright flash and an oblong (teardrop-shaped) object moving south-southwest at high speed. Two large red flashes and a loud rumbling/explosion were reported from multiple parties in Helena, Polson, and Ronan, with witnesses two miles south and one mile west of FD5101 reporting an explosion at 0115Z. CAA Flight Service, SAC, and WADF (Fairchild AFB) were notified.
