Narrative

On 31 July 1956 at 0310Z, civilian observers Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Merrill of Annapolis, Maryland reported a round, red-to-white object directly overhead at approximately 90 degrees elevation, observed for one hour, five minutes. An F-86D from a routine training flight was vectored to the area but found no tally-ho except the moon and numerous bright stars. The 647th ACWRON filed the report; senior director preliminary analysis was star or moonrise, with follow-up concluding the planet Mars was the object.
