Narrative

On 7 August 1956 at 1539Z, F-89 aircraft #54259 (call sign Beneficial 28) operating at 20,000 ft and 230 knots indicated detected an unknown target on APG-40 radar. Target appeared on radar at 12 miles, with blip similar to formation of two aircraft or one large aircraft. Pilot locked on, target was level at 65 degrees port, then 40-45 degrees high. Object crossed in front of A/C at 45 degree angle (converging stern quarter), went off side of scope at 4000 yards. Never sighted visually despite pilots looking. Total duration 3 minutes. The visibility in F-89 is limited and observers had previously noted unknown jet aircraft contrails circling. Tactical aircraft are believed to have descended past the aircraft.
