1986-11-18 — Alaska airspace, vicinity of Fort Yukon (near Anchorage ARTC
Narrative
On 18 November 1986 at approximately 0218 UTC, Japan Airlines Flight 1628 (a Boeing 747 cargo) over Alaska reported visual contact with two unidentified traffic targets at FL350. Crew described two objects ahead approximately one mile away. Anchorage ARTCC controllers attempted radar verification; no radar replies received initially. ROCC was contacted to check for primary radar targets approximately 40 miles south of Fort Yukon. Captain Kenjyu Terauchi later reported the objects were 'not made by humankind.' FAA later analyzed the radar and concluded the second target was an uncorrelated primary/beacon return from the JAL 747 itself.
