Narrative

At 1500Z on 12 October 1953, an SCR-584 Rawin Crew at Offutt AFB tracked an unidentified radar return that approached a meteorological sounding balloon at 33,000 feet. The object approached at 125-150 knots, slowed to the approximate speed of the balloon, then drifted behind it at distances of 200 to 800 yards. The radar operator left the set to attempt visual sighting with negative results. The object had disappeared by his return. Investigating officer Lt. Herbert G. Johnson noted similar sightings have occurred at the RBS site, with radar experts attributing it to microwave transmission phenomena aided by meteorological and astronomical activity.
