Narrative

On 19 May 1955 at 0140Z, F-86D pilot 1Lt Roger A. Jutras of 47th Fighter Intercept Squadron observed a spherical bright white object approximately 10 feet in diameter while flying in a port turn at 24,500 feet, 0.72 Mach, near Niagara Falls AFB. Object appeared as a bright flash at 10 degrees above starboard at 0140 Zulu. Slight angle of descent in straight forward movement, then light disappeared. 763d AC&W Squadron reported no air traffic at time. Possible cause: unidentified jet aircraft using afterburner. AISOP noted brevity (2-3 seconds) and balloon-like characteristics.
