Narrative

At 0700Z on 30 December 1954, an observer at Gassaway, West Virginia sighted four round red objects (silver-dollar apparent size) accompanied by a diesel-engine-like sound. The observer thought it was an airplane. Objects appeared to descend SW down the Elk River from 1042 feet to 1000 feet overhead, then climbed straight up to 2200 feet. Duration one minute. Aircraft in the same area (heading south) was detected on radar; senior controller indicated the sighting appears to check with that aircraft.
