Narrative

On 6 November 1954 at 2020Z, three pilots from the 469th Fighter Interceptor Squadron flying F-86D aircraft from McGhee Tyson Airport, Knoxville, Tennessee were diverted from CAP to investigate. Object observed at 45 degrees, 12 o'clock position over LaFollette, Tennessee for approximately 5 minutes. No radar contact. A 100-gram meteorological balloon had been released at 1500Z. All three pilots positively identified the object as a balloon of the type used in meteorological observations. Object was above them at 36,000-47,000 ft.
