During the sighting

Led second-night investigation Dec 27-28 1980; recorded the famous 'Halt Tape' on hand-held Lanier micro-cassette during forest investigation; observed three star-like lights, found indentations and elevated radiation readings. Wrote 'Halt memo' Jan 13 1981 to UK MoD.

After the sighting

Retired 1991 as Colonel. Public from early 1990s — TV documentaries, IUFOC 2011 keynote, Citizen Hearing on Disclosure 2013, books with John Hanson 2016+ ('The Halt Perspective' I & II), personal website, Coast to Coast AM regular.

Research notes

Among highest-credentialed UFO witnesses (USAF Colonel, 30+yr career, contemporaneous memo+tape from inside chain of command). Substantially better evidentiary footing than typical UFO witness who surfaces decades later. Discounted by 1981 memo factual errors, demonstrable 30-yr narrative drift, commercial entanglement, failure to address obvious natural-light explanations. 1981 memo+tape alone score 7-8; 2010 affidavit + book era pull composite down to 6.5.
